Ritual frequently involves darker aspects that include the use of violence, either physical or symbolic. This course engages students in a discussion of those aspects of ritual from a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from puberty rites in the Sepik River Valley in New Guinea to fraternity initiations to the crucifixion and communion in the Christian religion. After a general introduction to contemporary approaches to studying ritual, this course examines specific models of ritual and considers them in a variety of Western and non-Western contexts to understand the ways that violence is used in ritual cross-culturally. Recommended prerequisite: ANTH 100D or 203D.

Identification of individuals, time, and cause of death may be determined from an analysis of skeletal and, where available, soft tissue remains. Topics include homicides, genocide, battlefield casualties, cannibalism, and disease as mortality agents for human groups from the recent to the very distant past. Actual cases by forensic anthropologists are discussed. Recommended prerequisite: Prior coursework in Anthropology or Biology.
