In this course, students encounter poetry, fiction, memoirs, and other nonfiction works spanning the past four centuries of European settlement in North America, including works by such writers as Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson, Cather, and Faulkner, as well as more recent writers, whose works document our long relationship with nature and the wilderness and the rise of ecological awareness in the 20th century.
