    Will provide an introduction to the branches of pharmacology (pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and toxicology). Students will learn the basics of pharmacology for the various body systems, and will specifically focus on the top 100 retails drugs and the top 50 hospital drugs, and the side effects and dispensing issues, dosage forms and routes relative to those drugs. Additionally, students will learn the basics of vitamin therapy, drugs for bioterrorism and how they are stocked in KY, drugs for antidotes and transplant, and an overview of chemotherapy. (This course replaces both PHT 130 and 131)

    In this course, the student will review and apply the math needed to perform as pharmacy technicians, and will learn to calculate the dosages needed to compound and prepare medications. Course will cover alternative measurement systems (apothecary, Avoirdupois, household and metric), pharmaceutical allegations used to determine the amounts of one ingredient available in two strengths when a third strength is needed, basic math computations, ratio and proportion, the formula method of dosage calculation, percent strength by weight or volume, intravenous flow rates and drip rates, pediatric dosing, concentrations and dilutions.

    In this course the student will learn the math to perform common pharmacy calculations. Areas covered include ratio and proportion, weight-based doing, BSA, various measurement systems, nomograms, alligations, aliquots, and all calculations related to preparing IV fluids. (This course replaces "old" PHT 140 listed above)

    In this course the student will learn the hands-on techniques of weighing, mixing and preparing pharmaceuticals; safe and effective use of syringes and needles; all aspects of working under a sterile hood, working safely with chemotherapy, and USP 797. Much of the course will be comprised of a lab component.

    Designed for study of specific topics and/or current developments in pharmacy technology. May be repeated for credit as topics vary. Offered at the discretion of the College. Prerequisite: Departmental approval.

    In this course the student will complete approximately 250 hours in a clinical setting away from the College. This may involve some travel for the student, and the student will be required to wear scrubs. Each student will do an 80 clock hour rotation in a retail pharmacy, 40 clock hours in a small community hospital, and 120 hours in a teaching hospital. Additionally, students will complete 16-24 hours in the setting of their choice, which can include any of the above OR a drug wholesaler, pharmaceutical company, veterinary compounding pharmacy, or possibly other sites. Every effort is made to accommodate the student's request for a specific site. In some cases, based upon work experience, "life experience" may substitute for some hours.

    Students will complete 80 hours of externship in an ambulatory care pharmacy, approved in advance by program director. Student will meet with instructor one hour per week as needed to discuss issues with training an current issues in pharmacy. Student will maintain a journal of time and placed worked, processes learned, questions that arise, and any other issues student deems relevant. Preceptor at rotation site will complete a final evaluation of student and return to program director.
  • 2.00 Credits

    Student will complete 80 hours of externship training in a small Community hospital, learning the basics of medication cart fill, the IV room, automated dispensing if available, and purchasing. Student will meet with an instructor one hour per week as needed to discuss issues with training and current issues in Pharmacy. Student will maintain a journal of time and place worked, processes learned, questions that arise, and any other issues student deems relevant. Site must be approved in advance by program director, and preceptor will complete a final evaluation of student and return to director.
  • 3.00 Credits

    Student will complete 120 hours of externship training in an Advanced hospital, learning automated dispensing systems and other available technology such as robotics, more advanced compounding. TPN preparation, chemotherapy, contract purchasing, medication order software, and interaction with various other departments including Operating Room, Nursing, Post Anesthesia Recover, various research and hospital departments. Student will acquire more intensive IV room training and learn kits fills for OR, narcotic dispensing, and become familiar with the necessity for prioritizing tasks. Student will maintain a journal of time and place worked, processes learned, questions that arise, and any other issues student deems relevant. Site must be approved in advance by program director, and preceptor will complete a final evaluation of student and return to director.
  • 1.00 Credits

    Student will complete 16 hours in a brief rotation of their choice. Suggestions include working with a pharmaceutical representative (either Medical or veterinary), working with a veterinary clinic which does some compounding, working with a drug wholesales, etc. Student will meet with instructor one hour per week as needed to discuss issues with training and current issues in Pharmacy. Student will maintain a journal of time and place worked, processes learned, questions that arise, and any other issues student deems relevant. Course will include a major paper or project. Site must be approved in advance by program director, and preceptor will complete a final evaluation of student and return to director.
