The interrelatedness of man, environment, health, and nursing are explored within the framework of the Roy Adaptation model throughout the curriculum. The focus of Nursing I is on the foundations of nursing practice and role behavior of the beginning practitioner. Emphasis is on the nurse's role in assisting the client in maximizing positive adaptive physiological responses and in the maintainence of optimum health, in promoting safe nursing practice as it relates to specific basic technical skills of assisting human needs. Nutritional and pharmacological concepts and their implications for nursing care across the life span is introduced. Also, the course introduces the student to current social, legal, and ethical issues affecting nursing.

Nursing II builds on concepts and principles introduced in Nursing I and A&P 201. In part I emphasis is placed on the utilization of the nursing process in assisting the client across the life span with adaptation problems resulting from commonly occuring illnesses in the cardiovascular, respiratory systems. Concepts of fluid and electrolyte balalce, blood-form disorders, and perioperative nursing are introduced. In part II, mental health concepts and issues are introduced. Nutritional and pharmacological concelps are integrated throughout the course.

This course utilizes the conceptual framework and key concepts introduced in Nursing I to focus on the study of normal and therapeutic nutrition and its implications for nursing care of clients across the lifespan. Using the nursing process, the normal nutritional needs of infants, children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and adults are studied. Furthermore, principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition are studied in relation to the six essential nutrients as provided by the basic four food groups. Specific dietary adaptation is studied focusing upon clients with physiological/psychological alterations in the ingestion, digestion, metabolis, and elimination of nutrients. Finally, students are introduced to principles of hyperalimentation and total parenteral nutrition.
