This course utilizes the conceptual framework and key concepts introduced in Nursing I to focus on the study of normal and therapeutic nutrition and its implications for nursing care of clients across the lifespan. Using the nursing process, the normal nutritional needs of infants, children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and adults are studied. Furthermore, principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition are studied in relation to the six essential nutrients as provided by the basic four food groups. Specific dietary adaptation is studied focusing upon clients with physiological/psychological alterations in the ingestion, digestion, metabolis, and elimination of nutrients. Finally, students are introduced to principles of hyperalimentation and total parenteral nutrition.
