This course focuses on understanding that the hydrosphere and its impact and interaction with the biosphere and lithosphere are an important component of environmental science. Limnology is the study of fresh water bodies: their ecology, biology, physics, and chemistry. It includes study of both lentic (still water) and lotic (moving water) bodies. This course has a significant field component and requires students to travel some on weekends. The course emphasizes the human-water interface, vertebrate and invertebrate aquatic population studies, and aquatic chemistry. Field habitats studies will include: mountain lakes and streams, riparian zones, rivers, and coastal wetlands. Prerequisites: EES 110, or either BIO 110 or CHE 110 or permission of instructor.
