For students in the field of Education. The critical examination of theories of learning and their application to the classroom. Considers the effects that developmental stages, individual differences, motivation, personality, and attitudinal systems have on the learning and educational experience of children and adolescents. Prerequisites: PSYC 112 (or 234 or 235 or 237), admission to teacher education, and EDUC 221, 222, or 223.

Current issues in education. Conducted by University supervisors for all student teachers. Must be taken concurrently with student teaching. The following sections are offered in EDUC 427: Elementary and Secondary Education. (Special Education,early childhood and middle school majors must enroll in the Elementary section). (K-12 majors must enroll in the secondary section).

(Cross-listed with TESL 433) Focuses on the interrelationships of language and culture, aspects of linguistic and cultural diversity, cross-cultural communications and cultures issues in the classroom. The course emphasizes techniques for fostering cooperative learning, resolving conflicts, and meeting student needs in multicultural and language classrooms.

The development, grading, and interpretation of cognitive, performance, and authentic assessments. Interpretation of standardized test results along with their use in making educational decisions. Elementary statistics including descriptive statistics, normal probability distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Satifies the Math Proficiency requirement for Education students. Prerequisite: EDUC 221, or EDUC 222, EDUC 223.

(Cross-listed with TESL 436) Theories and models of second language acquisition. Psychological, political, and socio-cultural factors' contribution to second language acquisition, processes involved in acquiring a second language, and instructional implications of recent findings.

To enroll, a student must be formally admitted by the Teacher Education Committee on Standards and Approval. The student observes and then teaches under the direction of the cooperating teacher and University supervisor. Must be taken concurrently with EDUC 427. Under special conditions, a second assignment may be completed for additional credit (see EDUC 447). Sections are offered for all levels of student teaching.

Provides a focus on principles and practices of second language assessment. Students will review and analyze available assessment tools.

Review of methods and materials currently being used in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. Using current research, students read, explore, and discuss current practices pertaining to teaching, motivation, and classroom management that most effectively reach second-language students.

Earns additional credits when desired or needed for certification. Prerequisite: EDUC 437.

Focuses on current trends,issues, materials and methods of literacy instruction in the preschool and elementary classrooms. Taken concurrently with EDUC 453 Practicum in Communication Arts.
