CDBS 369: Implementing Coaching Model
1.50 Credits
West Virginia Northern Community College
Barry is new at quality control. He completed three weeks of training, but he has already made two major errors that cost of the first $3000. He is obviously upset and discouraged over his shaky start. If you were Barry's supervisor, what would you do? Situations like this one can cause managers to fret and fuss and begin talking about disciplinary action. However, leaders take a different approach. A leader would take the time to coach Barry and find out what is really going on -- perhaps determining that three weeks of training wasn't quite enough. Or perhaps discovering that Barry's mother died recently and he is struggling to concentrate. Or offering to find a mentor for Barry until the situation eases. Taking the time to evaluate a situation and making an action plan is part of the process of coaching for performance that you will explore in this course. You will learn when it is appropriate to mentor, train, counsel or discipline an employee, and you will be given guidelines and tips on how to perform each of these tasks in the most effective manner.

CDBS 371: Emotional Intelligence in Wkpl
1.50 Credits
West Virginia Northern Community College
Does intelligence alone determine success? Or do self-awareness, impulse control, persistence, zeal, self- motivation, empathy, and social deftness factor heavily into the equation? While not as readily quantified as IQ, these qualities, collectively termed "emotional intelligence" often determine whether or not people excel in life, relationships, and the workplace. In this simulation, you'll test your emotional IQ to see how it affects various aspects of professional life. This simulation is based on the SkillSoft Series "Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace."

CDBS 372: Assertive Communication
1.50 Credits
West Virginia Northern Community College
You are a team leader in an international consulting firm which primarily serves the manufacturing industry. Your group is responsible for producing high-priced Executive Conferences, for PR and for profit. While (and because) the group's initial meetings were very profitable, the need for more dollars to fund other efforts prompted a new mandate. You must reduce production cycles in order to increase the number of conferences and the industries they target. The firm's goal: to increase profit as well as to gain exposure in new markets. While you had your concerns about implementing this strategy, you informed the eam and outlined a streamlined procedure to reduce production times. However, several months later you found production times were longer than ever before. Your supervisor decided to step in and institute financial penalties for late delivery of conference agendas and programs. She announced this while you were on vacation, and on top of that, she put one of your best content developers "on probation." Her justification: the company is a flat organization and your team members are her direct reports. The simulation begins here. Your hand-picked team is on the verge of revolt, and they want you to do something. You must find a way to balance the needs of your team with the demands of your supervisor. Realizing that things have gotten out of hand, you have decided to modify your professional style and work on a more assertive approach in order to gain and maintain control.
