In this clinical course the student expands knowledge, skill, and attitudes necessary to assist individuals experiencing common health care problems to attain holistic health in a less predictable care environment. The student demonstrates skill in problem solving through the use of nursing process as they provide care for a variety of clients at different stages on the health/illness continuum appropriate to the role of the practical nurse. The student builds on previously acquired elementary communication concepts as a care provider and member of the healthcare team. Enrichment experiences are provided in selected areas at the instructor's discretion.

This course introduces the student to the care of the whole family. Concepts included in this course are considerations for care of the family unit including family composition, parenting styles, cultural and socioeconomic influences on the family, and family teaching. Concepts related to pregnancy and birth will be addressed. Certain aspects of health and illness of children from birth through adolescence will also be addressed. Application of growth and development theory to direct client care is emphasized. A case scenario approach to learning will be utilized in this course and this will include student projects and simulation.

This course provides an introduction to mental health concepts such as the mental health/illness continuum, the therapeutic use of self, and the therapeutic environment. In addition, it provides an overview of prevalent mental health illnesses and their treatment (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) from a nursing process perspective. Also included is a discussion of substance abuse, primarily ETOH and Methamphetamine abuse, as well as the 12-step approach to recovery. Students will participate in outside assignments to enrich classroom discussion. Concepts from the Foundations of Nursing course will be revisited in relationship to care of the clients with mental health needs.

In this self-directed course, students learn basic medical terminology. Prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, abbreviations and symbols are included in the content. Successful completion of this course meets the Nursing Pathway Medical Terminology admission requirement. (Self-directed)

Ethics in Nursing introduces the student to ethics-related terms, principles, and dilemmas specifically related to nursing. This course will encourage students to examine their personal value system.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the new role and acquisition of knowledge appropriate to the level of the Professional Nurse. Professional Nursing focuses on the impact of acute and chronic illness on the basic needs of the client. Holistic assessment and analysis will be emphasized in planning care for patients diagnosed with conditions identified as having a high mortality/morbidity rate. Concepts from year one of the pathway will continue to be integrated (e.g. culture, integrative therapies, wellness, and health promotion) within selected case studies. The teaching role of the professional nurse is threaded throughout the course. Students will participate in discussion related to issues associated with entry into a professional nursing role. (i.e. membership, committee involvement, continuing ed, certifications, laddering etc.).

In this course, the student will perform a holistic nursing assessment of the client throughout the lifespan. The development of a holistic database using a variety of theoretical frameworks will reflect an understanding of growth and development, cultural, spiritual, and family influences of the client. Further emphasis is placed on the development of communication skills, health promotion and referral skills within the scope of practice of the professional nurse. The student will participate in simulation experiences applying nursing assessment skills and evidenced-based practice using selected case studies presented in Professional Nursing.

Role Transition is a course for the licensed practical nurse returning to nursing education. Role Transition topics include nursing philosophy, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, nursing process, scope of professional practice, therapeutic communication, legal/ethical issues, transcultural nursing, and medication calculation. Students will begin development of an electronic portfolio (e-folio). Students will enroll concurrently in NURS 2030 Nursing Role Transition Clinical, a one (1) credit on-campus lab course.

This clinical lab course is designed to prepare the Licensed Practical Nurse for transition into year two of the pathway. Application of nursing process, critical thinking, nursing interventions, and therapeutic communication skills are emphasized in an on-campus lab or clinical setting.

In this clinical course, the student will care for the client in a variety of care experiences and across the lifespan. This course prepares the student to expand the application of knowledge, skills, and values from the practical nurse scope of practice to the professional nurse scope of practice. The student will focus on applying the nursing process in the care of the client with acute and chronic illness needs, including referral, and wellness promotion needs including the childbearing client. Students will begin to mentor first-year pathway students. The student will also participate in simulation experiences with a focus on advanced nursing skills using the selected case studies from Professional Nursing.
