This course will introduce students to the safe and proper use of common tools used in the construction of a residential building. This introduces students to the fundamentals of foundations, framing, roofing, insulation and wall layouts. Students will learn how to lay out a foundation, frame house walls and set engineered trusses. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in READ 100 or satisfactory test score, concurrent enrollment allowed; minimum grade of C in INTE 140 or satisfactory test score, concurrent enrollment allowed. Instruction and practice in methods commonly used to communicate technical ideas through the use of construction prints are emphasized. Students will develop skill in reading and interpreting construction print drawings. Instruments are used to make orthographic drawings that accurately describe design and size, including sketching multi-view, sectional views, auxiliary views and detail drawings of residential buildings. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CONS 110, concurrent enrollment allowed; and READ 100 or satisfactory test score, concurrent enrollment allowed. This course will concentrate on footings, foundation walls and wall forms. This course will also introduce students to soil types, bracing of forms that are utilized in different applications. Students will develop understanding of concrete properties and their applications, industry specific welding and acetylene torch utilization. [Semesters Offered: Variable]

This course will introduce students to framing methods utilized in the construction of a residential building. Students will learn to build different flooring systems, cut rafters, layout a stairway and build headers. Students will develop functional understanding of live and dead loads. This course will provide an introduction to the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems used in residential buildings. This course will introduce students to the elements involved in the preparation of the contractor's bid proposal. Quantity takeoff, crew sizes, daily outputs, unit costs and organization of the bid packages into general contracted and subcontracted work. The development of unit prices for estimating labor, material and equipment unit price development, productivity adjustment factors, overhead and profit, cash flow and interest calculations, conceptual estimating methods, and cost variance analysis.
