Recommended for students whose native language is Spanish but who have not studied it and have placed out of Spanish 1411, 1412, and 2311 with departmental exam. An introduction to Hispanic literary works that deal with the Hispanic civilization and culture. Attention to reading and writing skills, vocabulary building and oral expression. Reading of Spanish poetry, short stories, and excerpts of novels and plays. Aspects of Spanish music and art are also studied.

Included in the course are informative, persuasive, and good-will speeches as well as interviews and group presentations. Prerequisite: Texas Success Initiative complete in Reading and Writing. May be taken for Speech or Drama credit. A course designed to improve speech and conversation skills and the speaking voice. Study includes vocal anatomy, mechanics of breath control, inflection, phrasing and regional pronunciation problems. Emphasis is on pronunciation and articulation through study of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the sounds of the English language. Relevant for future teachers of reading.
