Warfare from ancient to contemporary times. Western and non-Western perspectives. Views from political science, philosophy, history, and official U.S. military doctrine. Interplay among international politics, military strategy, technology, and psychology. Prerequisite: 100, 101, 102, 103, or 150.

How states ensure their national security. Origins of the security dilemma; the use of power, deterrence, coercion, engagement, and interstate cooperation in settling disputes. Prerequisite: 100, 101, 102, 103, or 150.

Political, societal, and technological factors that could affect the future conduct of warfare. Insurgency and counterinsurgency. Military operations other than war. Prerequisite: 100, 101, 102, 103 or 150.

Under faculty supervision, students from any discipline gain experience with local, state, national, and international government offices or other politically related organizations. A thorough report and research paper are submitted at the end of the semester. Completion of 6 hours of political science, normally a 2.90 grade point average, and prior department approval of the student’s plan are required. May be taken on a Pass/Fail basis only and must be taken concurrently with 280b or 280c. These hours may not be included in the minimum hours required in the political science major. Corequisite: 280b and/or 280c.
