This course provides extensive experience with the Java language and its run-time development environment. Topics covered include object-oriented programming methodology (abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism), specific characteristics provided by the applications and applets using even-driven programming, and advanced programming techniques in the exception handling and network interface. Prerequisites: CST 2400 or CST 2450 or permission of the appropriate department chair.

Selected topics in computer science is a specially designed course for students interested in pursuing specific study projects under the supervision of a discipline instructor and approved by an advisor, the course instructor, and the appropriate department chair. No more than six semester hours in topics courses may be used in meeting minimum degree requirements.

This course places emphasis on the principles and applications of arithmetic including reading and writing numerals; fundamental operations on whole numbers and common and decimal fractions; percent, ratio and proportion; rounding; determining arithmetic mean; interpreting bar and line graphs; the English and metric measuring systems; operations with signed numbers; evaluating variable expressions and solving linear equations.

This course is a study of the properties of the real number system, arithmetic operations with rational numbers and order of operations; evaluation and simplification of variable expressions; solutions of linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable; graphing linear equations and inequalities; solving systems of linear equations and inequalities; problem-solving; polynomial arithmetic; operations with integer exponents; factoring polynomials and solving quadratic equations by factoring. Prerequisite: Documented competency in DSPM 0700 skills.
