    Prerequisites: MUSI 131 and 132 (grades of “C” or better) or by permission of the instructor. This credit is not valid towards performance requirements in any music majors or minors. Group instruction in functional guitar for Music Therapy (MT) majors. In Level II (152), barre chords and more difficult accompaniment styles are introduced. Students are required to demonstrate advanced group song-leading skills, ease in utilizing the capo in transpositions, and the ability to sight-read tablature and compose songs for therapy populations.

    A non-technical study of musical examples designed to acquaint the student with music through the study of the broad movements in the art from primitive civilization to the present. Music 171 does not count toward requirements for music majors and minors (See Music 371).

    Prerequisite/Co-requisite: Permission of instructor required, and music majors must register for Concert Attendance MUSI 001 every semester the student is taking any Studio Lessons which involve one on one private instruction with specific instruments. Credit is awarded on the following basis: One hour of credit for one-half hour of individual instruction per week or two hours of credit for one hour of individual instruction, appropriate practice, and studio jury at conclusion of the semester of study. . (Weekly lab is required for music majors in their primary area of study) A student may enroll in a maximum of 4 credits per semester. This course cannot be challenged.     Prerequisites: MUSI 131 and 132. This course provides practical guidance and study on implementing and growing a church music education program from preschool through senior adult. Discussion of enlisting, training, and retaining lay music leaders is included. Students receive instruction on implementing and maintaining an instrumental program, handbell program, and drama ministry in the church.

    Prerequisites: MUSI 131, 132, 134 and 135. This course explores the fundamentals of harmony and musical form in jazz and commercial music through the development of basic theory, keyboard and aural skills.

    Pre-requisite: Admitted to Horton School of Music. This course includes introduction to and practical experiences with technologies used in modern worship. The use of visual media, sound reinforcement, and theater lighting systems in worship are included. Students are introduced to current worship presentation video projection software in lecture and in computer lab settings. Musical instrument technologies are explored. Students also study the dynamics of developing technology ministry teams in the church.

    Prerequisites: MUSI 131, 132, 134, 135 and 227. This course leads the music & worship student to discover the fundamentals of orchestration, transcription, and arranging. These fundamentals are specifically applied in assignments related to the career ministry of a contemporary worship leader including vocal ensembles, praise teams, choirs, worship bands and church orchestras. Students learn to arrange traditional hymns for use in modern worship and are introduced to composing original compositions in contemporary song forms.

    Prerequisite: MUSI 134 and 135. Co-requisite: MUSI 232. Topics covered include variation technique, borrowed chords, 9th-13th chords, Neapolitan sixth chords, augmented sixth chords, altered dominants, chromatic mediants, sonata-allegro form, and 16th century modal counterpoint.

    Prerequisite: MUSI 134 and 135, Co-requisite: MUSI 231. A course to develop the aural skills for singing, advanced dictation of melodies and rhythms, and advanced chromatic dictation of melodic and harmonic materials. Specifically, these aural skills involve the identification of intervals, chromatic triad types, chromatic melodic lines, scales and modes, chromatic triad factors; seventh chords; the identification of complex rhythmic patterns and errors in complex rhythmic patterns; writing chromatic dictated melodies, multiple chromatic melodies, chromatic triads, seventh chords, chromatic harmonic progressions; sight-singing intervals, chromatic broken chords, chromatic melodies; the tapping or singing of complex rhythmic patterns.

    Prerequisite 231 and 232. Co-requisite: MUSI 235. Comprehension of theoretical principles underlying 20th century musical composition including advanced rootless quartal chords of jazz; devices of impressionism shown with influence of the music of Bali; advanced techniques of atonal music and serial music; algorithms and computer programs for analysis of 12 tone music; rhythmic devices of Hindustan India and central Africa; modal music of jazz and 20th century music; octatonic scales of Bartok as well as other artificial scales; prepared piano music of John Cage and aleatoric principles of the middle century; minimalist principles of the late 20th century; practical compositional skills of 20th century part writing; analytical skills of 20th century musical masterworks; music of other cultures.
