An introductory course for students interested in exploring the field of Music Therapy as a career. Students will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of music therapy foundations and principles, including the history and philosophy of music therapy. Includes observation and an overview of Music Therapy with various populations. This course is a prerequisite for all other Music Therapy courses. Permission of the instructor is required for students not majoring in Music Therapy. This course cannot be challenged.

Prerequisites: MUSI 101 (grade of āCā or better) or permission of instructor. Students are introduced to behavioral objectives, behavior management techniques and basic group dynamics. This course cannot be challenged.

3.00 Credits
A foundational course in the basics of music theory, sight-singing, ear training, dictation and music listening. Emphasis will be placed on mastery of the essentials of music knowledge through conceptual development, drill and application. Topics will be note names, clefs, rhythm, meter, intervals, triads, major and minor scales. Aural skills will be developed through singing in solfĆØge and rhythmic counting. This course is suggested for intended music majors who have not successful completed the music entrance exam. This course does not fulfill a degree requirement for music majors or minors. The course is open to other majors as an elective.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Music Entrance Exam and audition. Co-requisite: MUSI 132. Comprehension of theoretical principles underlying elementary composition emphasizing the primary chords and their inversions, non-harmonic tones, and transposing instruments; practical compositional skills of elementary part writing (figured bass and Roman Numeral chord progressions) and composition emphasizing the above; analytical skills of elementary diatonic musical masterworks emphasizing the above.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Music Entrance Exam and audition. Co-requisite: MUSI 131. A course to develop the aural skills for singing elementary melodies and rhythms, and dictation of melodies, rhythms and harmonies. Specifically, these aural skills involve the identification of intervals, triad types, melodic lines, scales, triad factors; the identification of rhythmic patterns and errors in rhythmic patterns; the writing of dictated melodies, multiple melodies, triads, diatonic progressions; the sight-singing of interval, broken chords, and melodies; the ability to tap or sing rhythmic patterns.

Prerequisite: MUSI 131 and 132 and admitted as a music major or minor or equivalent. Co-requisite: MUSI 135. A course in intermediate theory covering dominant 7ths, leading tone 7ths, modulation, non-dominant 7ths, secondary dominants, three-part form, two-part form, American popular song, and jazz idioms.

Prerequisite: MUSI 131 and 132 and admitted as a music major or minor, Co-requisite: MUSI 134 . MUSI 101 (grade of āCā or better) and co-requisite of MUSI 151-52 or permission of instructor. This course is required for Music Therapy majors and an elective for Music Education majors. Students experience music activity planning and leading; incorporation of movement and guitar and piano accompaniment; use of other instruments; and principles of pacing and transitions during group and individual sessions/lessons. The focus of this course is to develop music leading skills for Music Therapy and Music Education majors prior to focusing on therapeutic and/or academic objectives.

Prerequisites: MUSI 131 and 132 (grades of āCā or better), or by permission of instructor. Group instruction in functional guitar for Music Therapy (MT) majors. Level I (151) introduces first position chords and basic accompaniment styles. Students are required to lead and accompany group singing, transpose songs at sight, sight-read melodies and compose songs with simple accompaniment. Students are required to demonstrate advanced group song-leading skills, ease in utilizing the capo in transpositions, and the ability to sight-read tablature and compose songs for therapy populations.
