    4 credits This course is designed to help students learn to express their ideas to a public audience with confidence and clarity. The aim is to aid students in speaking in public by preparing presentations for use in various contexts to varied audiences on a variety of occasions. At a minimum, students will learn how to speak in the following contexts: informative, persuasive, and epideictic. In addition, students will learn to become critical listeners by analyzing others' presentations and identifying both effective and ineffective components of public speaking.

    4 credits Speech 112 is designed to provide students with an understanding of the persuasive communication process and practice in producing effective persuasive presentations so that they may better evaluate the persuasive messages they encounter. Students will demonstrate their proficiency through expository and persuasive speeches, written analyses, and argumentation practice.

    4 credits This course is designed for people whose work, study, travel and/or interests will involve them in intercultural interactions. A variety of topics will be addressed, including the ways in which beliefs, values and attitudes affect the verbal and nonverbal behaviors of people. Students will develop awareness, understanding and sensitivity to cultural diversity of different nations and of diverse cultural groups within the United States. Students will additionally have an opportunity to deepen an appreciation of their own cultural background, and the ways in which conflict and conflict resolution may be impacted by cultural assumptions and beliefs. May be offered through Distance.

    4 credits Business and Professional Communication is designed to increase student understanding and implementation of effective communication behaviors and skills. Throughout the term, students will learn to recognize, understand, and perform communication in situations common to business and the professions. Instruction includes thinking critically, listening, job search and interviewing skills, managerial and leadership communication, team and group communication, as well as making public presentations. Repeated employer surveys indicate of the many skills presently required to function effectively in the workplace, no skill is prized more than the ability to communicate well. In addition, special attention will be given to presentational aids both traditional and computer generated. May be offered through Distance.

    4 credits This course is designed to increase a student's understanding and implementation of effective interpersonal skills and behavior. The goal is to better understand one's self, others, and the role of communication in achieving and maintaining satisfying relationships in a variety of contexts, and to be able to transfer these skills/understanding to professional, social, and intimate relationships. Knowledge and skill building are used to enable improvement with special attention given to verbal/nonverbal communication, self-concept, perception, culture/gender differences, relationship development and conflict management.     4 credits The goal of this course is for students to increase their ability to understand and implement diverse communication styles as this relates to gendered communication. We will explore how Communication, Gender and Culture intersect to influence perceptions and expectations of gender roles. Students will also learn the advantages and disadvantages of implementing masculine and/or feminine styles of verbal and nonverbal communication in close relationships, the educational setting, within organizations and analyze their own communication style. This will be accomplished by exploring theoretical approaches to gendered identity and the development and influence of rhetorical movements, family communication, culture of origin and popular culture, educational setting, and media contributions to the formation of gendered identity. May be offered through Distance.

    1-2 credits Training in several speaking events for participation in intercollegiate speech and debate competition. The aim of this activity is to enable students to develop speaking skills in parliamentary debate and individual speaking events including platform speeches and oral interpretation. Students will prepare materials in their areas of interest and at their personal levels of skill development and will travel some weekends to compete in tournaments. Students without prior studies in speech communication may enroll in Forensics.

    4 credits This course offers the study and practice of the principles of voice production and the articulation of Standard American English, with attention to elementary speech physiology and phonetics. The course trains students to analyze and modify sound production. It is intended to serve students who desire to develop more effective speech and to meet the special needs of teachers, performers, radio and television speakers, public speakers, those who speak English as a second language, speech pathology majors, as well as others who seek to optimize their vocal competence.
