This class will teach managers to understand the role of the facilitator in group, team, and individual settings and develop skills to facilitate short and long-term projects. Participants will learn how to build commitment and foster a "we" approach, develop effective, time-saving agendas, deal with equipment and logistics such as room setup and flip-chart techniques, understand the different types of questioning techniques, become an active listener and give better feedback. The use of tools such as "brainstorming" and "storyboarding" will be covered.

Students will be introduced to a variety of skills to enable them to assist fellow students on their academic journey. The classroom portion of the class will consist of lecture, experiential learning, active listening, and communication skills, as well as an introduction to peer education, peer counseling, and peer theater. There will also be classroom seession on special topics related to campus issues, such as alcohol and substance abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and other topics addressed by peer educators. Students who complete the course will be eligible to be a member of Western's SOS Peer Education Crew and a member of the National BACCHUS & GAMMA Peer Education Network.

The course will briefly review the six classes of nutrients, energy balance, and physical fitness to assist in disclosing the myths and misconceptions of current weight loss schemes. Behavioral, as well as nonbehavioral, approaches to weight loss will be examined. Ultimately the student will be able to develop a personalized strategy for successful and permanent weight loss.
