Topics include value and benefits of trees, proper planting, pruning, insect and disease identification, and commercial use of pesticides. The class will also discuss the American Nursery Standards Institute (ANSI) and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) industry standards for woody plant material. (Prereq: None) (BP) 4 cr

This course is designed to give the student a fundamental understanding of the production process of the nursery industry. Labs will involve sexual and asexual propagation, which include commercially accepted methods of seed propagation; division, cuttings, layering, grafting and tissue culture. (Prereq: None) (BP) 3 cr

This course is a continuation of Arboriculture I with emphasis on tree care via rope, saddle climbing, and ground worker operations. Specialized topics and practices to include: climbing safety, climbing equipment, familiarity with ropes and knots, throw line, foot locking, mechanics of climbing and moving through trees via rope and saddle. The student will also learn how to provide support to climbers aloft through roping and rigging skills, material handling, equipment operation, chainsaw safety and customer service relations. Along with Tree Climbing Operations, Arboriculture and Advanced Arboriculture students can prepare for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Worker Certification, administered by the MN Society of Arboriculture (MSA). This course places an emphasis on trees within the urban setting where typical surroundings and conditions will influence best management practices using applied tree care operations. Specialized topics and practices will include tree climbing and ground worker operations, and the identification of hazardous trees and tree defects. The students will receive directions on how to provide support to climbers aloft through roping and rigging skills, material handling, equipment operation, chainsaw safety, and customer service relations. Students can prepare for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Worker Certification, administered by the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture (MSA) and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) Tree Inspector Certification process.
