4 credit hours This scientific literacy course deals with the structures of the earth and the theories of volcanism, plate tectonics, weathering and soil, mass wasting, streams, glaciation, deserts, oceanography and earthquakes. The students examine their potential roles as scientifically literate citizens with responsibility for sustaining the earth. In the laboratory, particular emphasis is given to scientific methodology. Field trips enhance the students' understanding of the principles of geology and the need for a sustainable existence.

Cultural regions that are examined in detail are East Asian, Southwest Asian, Pacific Rim, South and Middle American, sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe. The Anglo-American realm is used as the base for comparison. This comparison exposes the students to the relationships of human diversity and interaction among all cultural realms. The students examine the concepts and ideas that form the basis of the global world they live in and experience. By studying the cultural realms of the world, students are encouraged to build bridges of understanding to cultures alien to them.
