Study of origins and evolution of American schools as a social institution. Concern is with basis of legal structures and responsibility for governance and control, supporting agencies, and educational fi nancing. Emphasis is given to the purposes, programs, and functions of various school levels and to an understanding of the relationships and responsibilities of the state, community, profes- sion, and the teacher. Additionally, this course serves as the introduction to the teacher education program. Students are oriented to the program outcomes, requirements, and to the digital portfolio process. Must take ED 140 concurrently.
