With a focus on the elementary classroom, students will examine the four components of literacy: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Course includes a 45-hour practicum component allowing students to merge classroom theory with observation and practice. Content topics are: learning to read, emergent literacy, word recognition, fluency, scaffolding and comprehension, independent reading and reader response, writing and reading, reading instruction for ESOL students, classroom assessment, and fostering higher order thinking in content areas. Students will write lesson plans that focus on literacy goals.

Course explores methods and content for teaching music and art in the early childhood and elementary classrooms, allowing for exploration of self-expression. Students will examine research on integrating music and art into core subject areas to enhance teaching units and encourage creativity and exploration. Students will create lesson plans using music and art to encourage self-expression, build community, and ignite joy in learning. Attention will be given to state and national standards governing these areas.

Integrating Health and Physical Education will prepare students to teach about making healthy lifestyle choices through an understanding of health, nutrition, the body, exercise, and lifestyle choices. Topics include: determining developmentally appropriate curriculum, national and state health and physical fitness standards, working with special needs students, and strategies for utilizing resources in health/PE education.

This focuses on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing at the Early Childhood level. It explores: the influence of family on early literacy, when and how to assess young children in their communication skills, literacy strategies, fostering literacy, and igniting an appreciation of children's literature. Students will engage in a practicum with early childhood classrooms involving an examination of emergent literacy, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will create lesson plans focusing on literacy in the K-3 classroom.

This equips students to select topics for instruction and develop curriculum developmentally appropriate for young children. It explores effective use of play, music, art, drama, and the role of literacy in early childhood curriculum and instruction. Research-based strategies are explored for developing learning units and delivery methods effective for young learners. The role of the family, building relationships through cooperative learning, building social skills, and developing a love for learning will be examined.

This course studies the unique mind, will, and emotions of the adolescent in the context of human development. Specific topics include analysis and application of cognitive, socio-emotional, spiritual, and physical adolescent development theories as they pertain to teaching and learning.

This course is designed to help students identify content-specific instructional strategies and design curriculum utilizing those strategies. Topics include general pedogogical methods, content-specific methods, and integrated methods. Students will work together to develop integrated units across different subjects, and subject-specific lesson plans utilizing methodologies.

Students will identify, evaluate, and implement instructional strategies for teaching performance and/or skill-based subject areas such as music, drama, art, and physical education. Students will develop curriculum for a specific content area utilizing both general and specialized instructional strategies.

During this course students will explore math and science pedagogical practices for the middle school and high school student. Effective pedagogical practices will be identified for general science and math physics, chemistry, algebra, and geometry. General instructional methods will be integrated with subject-specific practices to prepare students to integrate best practices in their chosen content areas.

Provides skills and instructional strategies for developing techniques to teach Physical Education and Health. Students will be introduced to teaching methods and curriculum design for both subjects. Students will learn to plan, implement, promote and evaluate health education and physical education programs which utilize developmentally appropriate movement and fitness experiences for all learners.
