With a focus on the elementary classroom, students will examine the four components of literacy: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Course includes a 45-hour practicum component allowing students to merge classroom theory with observation and practice. Content topics are: learning to read, emergent literacy, word recognition, fluency, scaffolding and comprehension, independent reading and reader response, writing and reading, reading instruction for ESOL students, classroom assessment, and fostering higher order thinking in content areas. Students will write lesson plans that focus on literacy goals.
