    This is a nine credit-hour course. Students are introduced to complex diagnoses from the nursing diagnosis taxonomy. Clinical experiences are primarily in the acute-care hospital, where the student practices, in collaboration with the clinical instructor, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for both adults and children. Human dimensions emphasized in this course are Emotional and Cognitive. The student practices the management of care for multiple patients. Clinical experiences in acute mental illness are included. Prerequisite: C or better in NURS 1421 and NURS 1528.

    This is a one credit-hour course. A continuation of NURS 1421, this course uses a systems approach. Knowledge of human diseases forms an important part of the knowledge base for nursing care. Content is coordinated with NURS 2519. Prerequisites: NURS 1421 and NURS 1528. (Concurrent enrollment with NURS 2519)

    This is a nine credit-hour course. Students continue to practice nursing care, including assessment, analysis planning, implementation, and evaluation, based on accepted nursing diagnoses. All Human Dimensions are addressed in this course with emphasis placed on the Spiritual Dimension. Health Maintenance and promotion are also emphasized. Opportunities for students to master advanced problem-solving are provided throughout this course. Students also continue to practice management skills, delegation, and supervision. There is an additional emphasis on the attributes of the professional nurse. Prerequisite: C or better in NURS 2519 and NURS 2521.

    The seminar method is utilized to explore issues pertinent to entry into nursing practice. It includes a study of the roles and competencies of the beginning Associate Degree nurse, coupled with the practical aspects of assessing career opportunities, applying for a nursing position, and coping with career-related stress. Legal aspects of nursing are studied with emphasis on the Nurse Practice Act and the licensing role of the State Board of Nursing. (Spring, Year 2) (Nursing Elective - as needed)

    This course will examine the process of medical coding procedures. The student will be able to correctly enter Internal Classification of Disease (ICD-9-CM) diagnostic codes on a claim form, identify Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, and explain their application to a medical office/facility. The student will also identify various insurance plans, learn the rules and regulations of Medicare filing, translate written documentation into a numerical language, and describe legal issues concerning medical records.     This course is an introductory legal "office simulation" designed to provide training and experience for a student preparing for a position as a legal assistant, legal secretary, or legal transcriptionist. This course introduces students to the administrative routines and procedures most often performed by the legal office professional in an attorney's office. It also introduces students to legal terminology with emphasis on elements of legal terms, an understanding of standard legal abbreviations, spelling of legal terms, and an appreciation of the logical method found in legal terminology. It familiarizes students with a broad base of legal terms through transcription of realistic cases encountered in the typical law office. BA 1003 or High School typewriting strongly recommended.Offered at SSC and WWTC

    This course provides instruction in alphabetic, numeric, subject, and geographic indexing/filing; management of general correspondence, card records and business forms; records control and retention; and creating and evaluating records/information systems. The student is taught how to create and maintain records both manually and on the microcomputer using Microsoft Access database program. BA 1003 or High School typewriting strongly recommended.     This is an introduction to medical terminology with emphasis on etiology, symptomatology, pathology, and diagnostic procedures as related to medical assistant, medical secretarial, medical transcriptionist, nursing, and other allied health occupations/functions. It provides students with basic principles of medical word building, which, once learned, can readily be applied to building an extensive medical vocabulary. Offered at SSC
