This 45-hour non-credit Certificate is designed to provide entry-level training for those thinking of a career in or career change to the marine trades. This course will concentrate on preparation for marine technology, marine business management, marine sales, and basic boatyard skills. Upon successful completion, participants will receive the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association Certificate I. This credential will provide and excellent basis for hiring in the field. The $257 course fee may be reimbursable from the Massachusetts Marine Trade Association for students who are Massachusetts residents, satisfactorily complete the 45-hour course, and seek employment in the Marine trades in Massachusetts.

This course is one of four modules required to earn the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association's 475 Hour Marine Technology Certificate. This course presents a brief overview of the marine industry, working environment for technicians, marine tools, and equipment. Also introduced are the fundamental principles of internal combustion engines (two and four stroke), engine systems, basic electricity, as well as marine electrical and electronic components. Topics include starting, charging, and ignition systems, instrumentation, trouble-shooting and diagnostics. Instruction includes both lecture and hands-on training. The other three modules: Marine Technology Outboard Engines, Marine Technician Boat and Motor Systems, and Marine Technician Boatyard Skills will be offered during following semesters. Through this program, assistance in gaining a position in the recreational marine trades is offered by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.

Included are instructions on the fuel, electrical, lubrication, and cooling systems of two and four stroke outboards, both carbureted and injection engines. Also covered are lower units and propulsion, power tilt/trim, winterization and preventive maintenance. Instruction includes both lecture and hands-on training. The other three required modules: Marine Technician Fundamentals, Marine Technician Boat and Motor Systems, and Marine Technician Boatyard Skills will be taught in following semesters. Through this program, assistance in gaining a position in the recreational marine trades is offered by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.

The automotive differences among the engines, as well as their various cooling, exhaust, gearing, propulsion, and hydraulic systems are presented. Participants learn the theory, operation, controls, maintenance, and troubleshooting skills for marine diesel engines. Instruction includes both lectures and hands-on training. The other three modules: Marine Technican Fundamentals, Marine Technician Outboard, and Marine Technician Boatyard Skills will be offered during following semesters.
