Emphasis will be placed upon the identification and acquisition of broad communication and relationship-building skills, specific counseling techniques, a counseling response repertoire, and an understanding of the interaction between theory and technique as it applies to actual practice. Simulated supervised counseling experience will be provided through the use of micro-counseling and role playing; the course will provide the opportunity to practice actual counseling techniques and interview behavior prior to the practicum. Prerequisites: PSYCH 745 Introduction to Counseling and Psychotherapy and PSYCH 818 Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy, admission to a graduate practitioner degree program in psychology or counseling and permission of instructor.
