(3 Credit Hours) The purpose of the course is to provide students with first hand experience dealing with schools and children by placing them in area classrooms to observe teachers, children, methodologies, and evaluation processes. Students enrolling in this course must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 and have completed 2 (4 Credit Hours) including ED 201 (Introduction to Education) and PSY 102 (Human Growth and Development) or permission from the instructor.

(3 Credit Hours) This course is designed for education students who need to be prepared to handle the realities of the multilingual classroom. Through a brief analysis of language, an overview of second language acquisition (SLA) theory and practice, and a variety of classroom activities, students will begin to internalize the principles behind SLA in order to recognize and capitalize on opportunities for fostering language development in the multilingual elementary classroom.

(1 Credit Hour) This course is designed to provide the opportunity for prospective and practicing substitute teachers to learn, design and share strategies that work for elementary and intermediate grade levels. The topics of practice and discussion include state regulations for substitutes, lesson planning, transitions, discipline, communications, public relations and effective writing skills.

(3 Credit Hours) This course is designed for certified educators and paraprofessionals to begin a collaborative team effort in developing English as a Second Language strategies for the regular classroom. Prerequisites: Introduction to Literacy in the Multilingual Classroom, no prerequisites for certified teachers.

(3 Credit Hours) This workshop is designed to provide the opportunity for substitute teachers to learn, design and share strategies that work for elementary through high school grade levels. This workshop could benefit beginning substitute teachers as well as those with experience.

(1 Credit Hour) A course structured to give students credit for participating in the statewide Academic Excellence Challenge competition (College Quiz Bowl team). Enrollment is open only through competitive tryout or through the request of the instructor(s). Credit hours are variable, but the student will normally receive one hour of credit. D

(1-3 Credit Hours) The purpose of the Directed Independent Study course is to provide opportunities for enrollment in chosen courses for traditional and non-traditional students. Sessions are taught on a one-on-one basis by appointment. Permission granted by instructor. D

(3 Credit Hours) The purpose of the Directed Studies for Para-professionals course is to provide student special education para-professionals with the opportunity to observe and participate in the role of the para-professional in various employment set tings. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to practice various methodologies, behavior management techniques, teaching techniques and other job responsibilities of the para-professional. The purpose of the seminar section is to reinforce and help the student gain the most information about their practicum experience. D

(3 Credit Hours) This course introduces the student to the various classifications in special education. The course will describe the characteristics, behaviors, diagnoses, emotional and social implications, placement possibilities, instructional methods and long-term life (vocational) implications for the following categories: high risk, developmentally delayed, mentally retarded, visually impaired, hearing impaired, orthodontically impaired, severely handicapped, gifted, learning disabled, behavior disordered, speech-language impaired and other health impaired.

(3 Credit Hours) This course presents information concerning the everyday operation of the special education system including IEPs, data collection, testing, behavior management, IEP development, teaching techniques, and community and classroom resources.
