This course is designed to be a gateway to employment in an auto body shop. The student will work in an auto body shop for at least four weeks. During that time the auto body shop supervisor will observe the student's knowledge, ability, and attitude. The shop supervisor will convey his evaluation to the College instructor. This course is designed to introduce the student to the spark ignition engine. Emphasis will be placed on engine nomenclature, operation, rebuild procedure, and precision measuring instruments relative to the course. The student will perform a complete rebuild on a furnished engine with evaluation of the work performed on an engine dynamometer. This course is designed to give the student a more in-depth study into the spark ignition engine. Emphasis will be placed on engine design, operating parameters and diagnosis. The student will analyze failures and engine parameters as they affect efficiency and power. The evaluation and diagnosis will be performed on an engine dynamometer. This introductory work experience is designed to give students an opportunity to get an orientation to automotive technology employment in an industrial setting. This work experience requires 160 hours or more on-the-job activities providing the student the opportunity to apply the basic fundamentals. This also will give a better understanding for principles to be learned in the more advanced courses. This course is also designed to provide a culminating experience for the student pursuing the basic certificate program.
