CHD 202: Math and Science for Children

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the basic concepts of mathematics and science for young children. Students will learn to assess a child's developmental level in these areas and plan growth enhancing activities. Limited participation in the campus child care is required. Prior to enrollment in any course requiring participation in the campus child care center, a student must meet all DCFS requirements, pursuant to the Illinois Child Care Act [225 ILCS 10] Reg. 923, effective 1998. An orientation of the child care center, physical exam, negative TB test, DCFS background check, and electronic fingerprinting are required prior to participation at the center. This course is an overview of children with exceptional cognitive, physical, social and emotional characteristics. The curriculum includes an analysis of developmental and educational needs imposed by exceptionality. It also offers identification and intervention strategies, methods, and programs that are designed to meet the needs of children, including, but not limited to, those identified as learning disabled. The course includes the study of applicable federal and state laws and requirements: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Individualized Family Service Plan, Individualized Education Plan, and inclusive programs. This course is the third in a sequence designed to prepare students as classroom teachers of young children. The course focuses on students' increasing responsibility when in charge of a classroom of young children, in a supervised situation. Ongoing assessment of children, integration of curriculum and implementation of that curriculum will be stressed. Four hours per week are spent in the campus child care, gradually taking responsibility for operation of the classrooom. This structured, supervised on-the-job experience takes place within an approved early childhood program. The college child development instructor will coordinate the learning activities through periodic consultations with the student and the program's staff member who supervises the student. The experience requires 300 hours of work experience, including 200 hours of contact with children in an approved program. Evaluation will be based upon the quality of work in relation to implementation of principles previously learned in child development courses. CHI 101: Beginning Chinese

This is a Chinese language course for beginners. Its aim is to help students to develop communicative competence in the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Chinese language. Students will learn basic vocabulary and sentence structures for use in essential everyday situations through various forms of oral and written practice. Pinyin (the most widely used Chinese phonetic system) will be taught as a tool to learn the spoken language. Students will also learn Chinese characters in order to be able to communicate effectively in real Chinese situations. Approximately 200 words and expressions in both Pinyin and characters will be taught.
