This course provides an online study of the eight functional areas of early childhood education as they relate to children between the ages of 0-3. Online instruction will provide the student with a thorough understanding of infant and toddler children as it relates to child growth and development through developmentally appropriate practices in teaching. Students will complete their professional resource file during the course and submit it online for review. Prerequisites: HEV 0010 and HEV 0185. Corequisite: HEV 0187.

The theories of child development are introduced and discussed to acquaint the student with the importance of healthy growth and development childcare practices. Students will be introduced to typical stages of development through the theorist work and how to apply this information to children in their care. Center-based course. Part one: 20-hour training - all child care personnel employed before October 1, 1992, except volunteers or substitutes who work less than 40 hours a month, must complete the HRS approved 20-clock hour introductory child care training course provided by qualified trainers and approved by the training coordinating agency. Part two: 10-hour training - Behavior Observation and Screening (BOSM). This course has been developed to teach basic observation and screening principles to child care providers. NOTE: Within a year of completing the DCF 30-Hour Center-Based State Mandated Training Modules, students will need to complete an additional 10 hours to complete the Florida state requirement of 40 hours of mandated training. Completion of a developmentally appropriate practice course (DAP) for the age group or specialization that they work in is required. (DAP courses offered: HEV 0090, HEV 0091, HEV 0092 and HEV 0094.).
