This course will introduce the student to the construction industry. Basic knowledge of the organizational structure associated with the design/construction process (architect, engineer, general contractor, subcontractors and material suppliers). The course also introduces various construction management procedures and how they relate to specific jobsite cost and schedule controls. This is a Credit-by-Exam course for apprenticeship students only.

An introduction to the art of building, this course deals with whole systems of building: heavy timber framing, wood platform framing, masonry loadbearing wall, structural steel framing, concrete framing, and enclosure/ interior finish systems. The evolutionary development of the system, the properties of its major materials, the possibilities and limitations of the building method, and the basis for choosing among systems is covered. Lab fee required.

A study of the techniques and symbology involved in the preparation of light construction plans, structural sections, framing, elevations, and details used in working and presentation drawings. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: IND 1010 or ETD 1320C.

Continued study in building construction techniques including the preparation of working drawings for commercial buildings, materials and specifications. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: BCN 2251C.

Blueprint Reading is a study of the principles involved in the use and interpretation of drawings and specifications commonly used in light construction. Topics include history of recorded drawings, architectural and structural details, materials, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems and related building code requirements. Lab fee required.

In this course the fundamental concepts of mechanics, including resultants of force systems, free body diagrams, equilibrium of rigid bodies, analyses of structures, friction, and moments of inertia will be discussed. The specific application of these concepts will be developed as they pertain to building design and construction. Lab fee required. Prerequisites: MAC 1105, MAC 1114, PHY 1053C, ETI 2420, all with grades of C or better.
