    This course introduces the student to the opportunities in and the requirements of the construction industry. Topics include economic outlook for construction, employment outlook, job opportunities, training, apprenticeship, entrepreneurship, construction tools, materials, equipment, and safety. Upon course completion, students should be able to identify the job market and types of training and should know about apprenticeship opportunities, construction tools, materials, equipment, and safety procedures.     This course introduces the student to floor and wall layout and to construction. Topics include methods of house framing, components of floor framing, layouts, sub-flooring, connectors and fasteners, and site preparation. Upon course completion, students will be able to identify various types of floor framing systems, select the sizes of floor joists, identify types of house framing, list types of fasteners, identify property lines and set backs, and demonstrate a working knowledge of terrain and batter boards.     The student will engage in applications of floor and wall construction, application of required tools, and the use of builder transit, level rod, tape measure, and grade stakes. Emphasis is placed on cutting sill plates, floor joists, girders, header bridging, sub-flooring, stud wall partitions, door and window headers, wall bracing, level instruments, and batter boards. Upon course completion, students should be able to lay out and construct a floor, including the sill, joist bridging, and openings; to install sub-flooring; to construct interior and exterior walls; and to lay out property stakes of site plans.     This course provides practical and safe application of hand, portable power, stationary, and pneumatic tools; use of building materials, fasteners, and adhesives; and job safety. Emphasis is placed on the safe use of hand, power, and pneumatic tools; proper selection of lumber, plywood, byproducts, nails, bolts, screws, adhesives, fasteners, and other construction materials; and job safety. Upon course completion, students should be able to identify hand, power, stationary, and pneumatic tools, as well as demonstrate their safe use; to identify and select appropriate wood and non-wood building products; and to use nails, fasteners, and adhesives properly.     This course introduces the student to the basic concepts of blueprint reading. Topics include scales, symbols, site plans, and notations. Upon course completion, students should be able to identify drawings, to scale various drawings, and to identify different types of lines, symbols, and notations.
