    Students in level three of the International Student FOCUS program will work on reading and writing skills in English in this course. Grammar will also be covered. The goal of the course is to teach paragraph writing with the final component being to develop a five-paragraph essay. Reading will be a strong component of writing, as it relates to academic courses that the students take at the College. Prerequisites: ISP 097 or permission of the FOCUS Coordinator. This course does not count toward graduation. Corequisite: FOCUS Level 3 placement or permission of FOCUS Coordinator. Offered every semester.

    This course focuses on American culture, cross-cultural conflict/resolutions, academic expectations, and strategies and study skills as they relate to the student's planned curriculum. This course will involve reading, listening, writing, grammar, and using abstract concepts. Corequisite: FOCUS placement or permission of FOCUS Coordinator. This course fulfills the FYS 100 requirement for FOCUS students. Offered every semester.

    This course will allow students to review and practice skills necessary for taking the TOEFL examination. The class meets weekly and will focus on reading, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and grammar skill development. Test-taking strategies will also be emphasized. Prerequisite: FOCUS level 4 placement. Offered every fall semester.

    Provides the basic mathematical skills including a review of the fundamental operations of arithmetic and a discussion of fractions, percents, and decimals as well as the application of basic concepts to the solution of problems. Placement by assessment only. This course does not count toward graduation. Students who place into MTH 099 must complete this course in their first semester. Offered every semester.

This course introduces the student to algebraic essentials necessary in College Algebra (MTH 151). Topics include variable expressions, linear equations and graphs, polynomials, factoring, polynomial equations and rational expressions. Placement by math assessment only. Offered every semester. Fulfills general education math elective requirement.

    This course explores various topics chosen to develop a sense of the nature, beauty and utility of math. The process of mathematical thinking (inductive, deductive, and algorithmic) is emphasized. Ideas explored will be chosen from the following areas: set theory (with venn diagrams), logic and proof, systems and numbers, groups and fields, probability, statistics (including the normal curve), various base systems, and the history of numeration. Prerequisite: C- or better in MTH 117 or MTH 121, placement by math assessment exam, or permission of Department Chair. Two years of high school math recommended. Offered every semester. Fulfills general education math elective requirement.

    Topics include descriptive statistics, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability rules and probability distributions, the central limit theorem and simple hypothesis testing. Application to real-world problems is stressed throughout the course. Prerequisite: C- or better in MTH 117 or MTH 121, placement by math assessment exam, or permission of Department Chair. Offered every semester. Fulfills general education math elective requirement.

    This college-level algebra course is a gateway to the study of higher mathematics. It is also useful preparation for courses with quantitative content. Topics include: polynomials, rational expressions, radicals and exponents, linear and polynomial functions, function theory and graphing, and systems of linear equations. Prerequisites: A grade of a C- or better in MTH 117, MTH 121, MTH 125, MTH 130, or placement by math assessment exam, or permission of Department Chair. Offered every semester. Fulfills general education math elective requirement.

    Preparation for calculus and the physical sciences. Topics include: trigonometric functions and graphs; inverse function theory, inverse trigonometric functions, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Prerequisite: C- or better in MTH 151, placement by math assessment exam, or permission of Department Chair. Offered every semester. Fulfills general education math elective requirement.
