Occupational Therapy 2 Credits Life satisfaction, meaning, multicultural aspects, and activity analysis of ADLs, work, and leisure are addressed in this course. Safety and prevention are a focus. Hygiene, dressing, eating, mobility, socialization, and sexual expression are all covered. ADL assessments are covered in detail. Students practice using assistive devices, adaptive equipment, and family training. Assessment and treatment in the performance areas of work, play, and leisure are also addressed. Prevocational independent work will be examined from an occupational therapy perspective. The role of play and leisure throughout the life span will be addressed. Occupational Therapy 2 Credits Two hours per week in a local community mental health center are required. Working in pairs, students complete an ACL and COTE with clients. In addition, students lead a task or communication group with clients. Students are responsible for their own transportation to clinical sites. Occupational Therapy 2 Credits Two hours per week in a school system, day-care center, or day camp are required. Working in pairs, students lead activities with children within the structure of the day care center or day camp. Occupational Therapy 2 Credits Two hours per week in a local adult day-care center and/or community living center are required. Working in pairs, students complete a life history interview with clients. In addition, students lead a ROM/exercise group weekly with clients. Occupational Therapy 4 Credits Assessment media and approaches in a mental health or cognitive setting are addressed. Students learn several assessments from different frames of reference. In addition, treatment plan documentation is introduced. Safety and suicide precautions are highlighted. Group and individual treatments in mental health and cognitive settings are covered in detail. Using the practice framework as the foundation, students learn several treatment modalities, including assertiveness training, social skills, projective arts, relaxation, sensory integrative techniques, and cognitive approaches. Occupational Therapy 4 Credits Normal and abnormal physical development is addressed. Etiology, signs, symptoms, management, and occupational therapy concerns of neurological, orthopedic, systemic, traumatic, and developmental disorders are surveyed. Assessment media and approaches in a physical management setting are addressed. Students learn several assessments from different frames of reference. A focus is on the most commonly used clinical assessments, including MMT, FIM, and AMPS. Motor processing and visual perceptual assessments are included. Treatment approaches used in occupational therapy for people with neurological disabilities are surveyed. Bobath, Brunnstrom, Rood, NDT, and PNF are all addressed. Cardiac, head trauma, and spinal cord injury are covered in detail. Pain management, wound care, pressure garments, apraxia, aphasia, low vision, and sexual functioning are covered from the occupational therapy perspective. Treatment approaches used in occupational therapy for people with orthopedic disabilities are addressed. Clinical skills in wheelchair measurement, physical agents, and exercise are covered from the occupational therapist’s perspective. A focus is on the most commonly used clinical assessments, including the MAP, SIPT, play observation, and parent interviews. Treatment approaches cover medical, community, and school-based practice.
