-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL121, BL126, BL201, BL202. Corequisite: BL223. A study of physical, chemical, and biological interrelationships in aquatic environments including freshwater, estuarine, and marine systems.99
-
1.00 Credits
Corequisite: BL222. Field trips reinforcing the concepts of BL222. Trips may include visits to local streams, res- ervoirs, and Chesapeake Bay sites. Trips may be supple- mented by laboratory analysis of collections. Weekend field trips may also be required.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL121, BL126, BL201, BL202. Corequisite: BL231. An introduction to the study of birds, their evolutionary origins, diversity, special adaptations, life histories, social behavior, and ecology.
-
1.00 Credits
Corequisite: BL230. Emphasis is placed on learning to identify local bird species. Dissections and other labo- ratory exercises familiarize students with birds' unique adaptations and ecology. Occasional field trips and a weekend camping trip further accomplish these goals.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL 118, BL119, BL121, BL126. Recommended Prerequisite: BL201, BL202. An introduction to the excit- ing and amazing world of animals without backbones. The course focuses on the life histories, behavior, struc- ture, physiology, and ecology of common invertebrate groups. Consideration is given to adaptations for inter- acting with plants and animals. Emphasis is also placed on those creatures that have a significant impact on the human condition, including those invertebrates of medical and agricultural importance.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL121, BL126. Recommended Prerequisite: BL201. An introduction to the insect world emphasizing insect life histories, structure, behavior, physiology, and ecol- ogy. Consideration is given to adaptations for interact- ing with plants, animals, and man.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL118, BL119, BL121, BL126. An integrated approach to the developmental, microscopic and macroscopic anatomy of the vertebrates. Closed to stu- dents who have taken BL206 or BL208.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL201, BL202. An introduction to the prin- ciples of ecology stressing interaction between organ- isms and their environment at the levels of the indi- vidual, population, community, and the ecosystem. These principles are then applied to current environ- mental and conservation problems and issues. Labo- ratory experiments, computer simulations, and field experiences designed to demonstrate basic ecological principles. One weekend field trip may be required.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL118, BL119, BL121, BL126, BL201, BL202. An introductory course in genetics with lab exercises using plants, Drosophila, and humans to reinforce the principles of classical, molecular, and population genetics.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: BL118, BL121. An introduction to genetics focused on principles of classical, molecular, and population genetics.
