Molds will be made in various materials and complexities. The wax work will include carving, build-up, and fabrication from wax wire and sheet. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: Identify types of molds and how they are made from an original model. Prepare master model and vulcanize rubber mold. Cut rubber mold and inject wax pattern. Vulcanize and cut a silicone mold. Make an RTV(cold) mold and cut. Construct a wax pattern by carving. Construct a wax pattern by the build-up method. Inject a wax pattern and modify it to fit an odd cut or size stone. Polish and prepare a wax pattern for sprueing. The student prepares patterns and casts with silver and gold. This course includes the sprueing of wax patterns, calculating metal weight, investing, burnout cycles, and centrifugal casting. PREREQUISITES: JLRY 1320 & JLRY 1330 COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Define and identify the metals and their alloys used in casting jewelry. 2. Demonstrate alloying procedures with silver and gold. 3. Identify casting methods and equipment. 4. Sprue wax patterns for casting. 5. Calculate metal weight for casting from the wax pattern. 6. Prepare investment and invest patterns. 7. Burn out a prepared flask using both automatic and manual cycles. 8. Prepare metal to be cast. 9. Remove flask from burnout furnace and cast using centrifugal method. 10. Cast by vacuum method.
