Instructions include how to use a gemscope, refractometer, polariscope, specific gravity fluids, and several filters. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Define gemstones. 2. Identify types of gemstones by family, color, hardness, and specific gravity. 3. Identify gemstone testing instruments. 4. Identify unknown gemstones using the microscope, refractometer, filters, and other testing instruments. 5. Explain enhancement and grading methods of gemstones. 6. Identify types and grades of pearls. Identify both faceted and alternative birthstones. Grade diamonds by the 4 C's. Appraise an article of jewelry.
