    3 hours credit Although humans have only been living in cities for approximately 5,500 years out of our total history, city living has become the norm. In relation to our own society, urbanism has become the American way of life. For the majority of people in America, life will be spent in an urban area. Those rural living environments which remain today are tied to urban areas, culturally, politically and economically. Thus, regardless of where one lives or what occupation one follows the city must be taken into account. Development of the modern city and its functions are emphasized. The influence of urban life on personality, social programs, and social interaction are studied. Prerequisite: Sociology, SOSC-0107 or consent of the instructor.

    3 hours credit This course is designed to provide an introduction to the nature of Social Work as a helping profession within the larger arena of the social service system. As such, it serves three major purposes: As one of the required introductory courses for students planning to obtain the Bachelor of Social Work degree, it provides the fundamental knowledge about and beginning socialization to the social work profession. It serves as a career-testing course for those who are considering Social Work as a profession. It provides information for students who would like to know more about Social Work and its activities.

    1-3 hours credit A continuation of Introduction to Social Work, SOSC-0210 and Introduction to Social Welfare, SOSC-0212. This course is available in 1, 2, or 3 credit hour versions. This course provides 30 to 90 hours of actual contact with the profession of Social Work through projects with agencies in the community and provides opportunities for students to observe Social Workers in the field. This course is an exposure course and is not a field practicum. Generally the minimum required credit hours for this course are two. The course may be taken for up to three credit hours in various combinations. Students are urged to check with their prospective college or university for exact requirements. Prerequisite: SOSC-0210, Introduction to Social Work or SOSC-0212, Introduction to Social Welfare may be taken concurrently. The student should have a basic knowledge of APA writing format.

    3 hours credit This course is a multidisciplinary approach to the study of 1. 2. 3. global political economy in general and GLOBALIZATION in particular. It is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts, theories and the history of contemporary globalization. To that end, competing theories and various historical epochs particularly the Post World War II era are discussed. Of particular interests are an examination of the impact of globalization on the nation-states' socio-economic and political structures, the nature and the scope of global capitalist class alliance, capital/labor relations, war and peace, global inequality, environmental issues, and human rights. Prerequisite: Principles of Economics (micro or macro), or Sociology, or Geography, or Foreign Policy/International Relations.

    3 hours credit This course is designed to enable the interested student to conduct independent research under the supervision of a faculty member on a topic of sociological relevance. Prerequisite: SOSC-0107, Sociology, consent of the instructor, and consent of the Honors Education Director.

    3 hours credit This is a basic speech course dealing with the oral communication process through the study of public speaking. Students will learn to select topics, analyze their audience, organize and gather support for a speech, improve delivery skills and reduce communication apprehension, listen for information and evaluation purposes, and distinguish between different types of speeches. Each student will develop and deliver a minimum of four speeches during the course.
