3.00 Credits
3 hours credit This course is set up to award forensic science students three hours credit for "on the job" training. Students will be requiredto work a minimum of 144 clock hours, at the intern site, during the internship. The purpose of this type of course is two fold: to give students practical experience in the field of forensic science, and to allow prospective employers to be aware of student's abilities. Prerequisite: Introduction to Forensic Science CHEM-0101, and Forensic Science Analytical 165 Techniques CHEM-0201 (or concurrent enrollment in this course).
-
5.00 Credits
5 hours credit This course introduces and surveys the field of organic chemistry. Major types of aliphatic and aromatic compounds are surveyed as to naming, structure's preparations, and reactions. The laboratory portion emphasizes modern techniques of organic chemistry. Three lectures and four laboratory/discussion hours per week are required. Prerequisite: General Chemistry, CHEM-0109 or College Chemistry I and Lab, CHEM-0111.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit The course covers aliphatic and aromatic compounds with emphasis on organic reactions and reaction mechanisms, nomenclature, stereoisomerism, and spectroscopy. Three hours of lecture per week are required. Students should enroll in Organic Chemistry Laboratory, CHEM-0213 at the same time. Prerequisite: College Chemistry II and Lab, CHEM-0112.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit A continuation of Organic Chemistry I, CHEM-0211 lectures cover the main functional groups not discussed in 0211: ethers, acids, esters, aldehydes ketones, and amines. Prerequisite: Organic Chemistry I, CHEM-0211.
-
2.00 Credits
2 hours credit This first-semester laboratory deals with the fundamental techniques involved in organic laboratories such as distillation, crystallization, extraction, solubility, and various types of chromatography. Four laboratory hours per week are required. It is recommended that students enroll concurrently in Organic Chemistry, CHEM-0211. Prerequisite: College Chemistry II and Lab, CHEM-0112.
-
2.00 Credits
2 hours credit The emphasis of this continuation of Organic Chemistry I Lab, CHEM-0213 is on organic synthesis and identification. Prerequisite: Organic Chemistry I, CHEM-0211 and Organic Chemistry I Lab, CHEM-0213.
-
4.00 Credits
4 hours credit The biochemistry course is an introduction to the structure and functional relationships of the major bio-molecules including: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. An overview of the major metabolic pathways and current techniques in molecular biology will also be provided. Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry I, CHEM-0211 and Organic Chemistry I lab, CHEM-0213, or General Organic Chemistry, CHEM- 0203.
-
2.00 Credits
2 credit hours The laboratory will consist of qualitative and quantitative biochemical experiments. Particular emphasis will be placed upon biochemistry laboratory techniques including: chromatography, spectroscopy, electrophoresis and computer modeling. Prerequisites: CHEM-0201, General Organic Chemistry OR CHEM-0211 and CHEM-0212 Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry I lab.
-
1.00 Credits
1 hour credit This course is designed to help students prepare for a career in Early Care and Education. Students will learn practical ways to guide young children through a variety of daily experiences in safe, educational ways.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit This course is designed to prepare students to become substitute teachers with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in early childhood education settings. Students will be trained in basic first aid, abuse/neglect identification and reporting, recognizing signs and symptoms of illness, universal precautions, and basic early childhood curriculum. Students will learn practical ways to guide young children through a variety of developmentally appropriate experiences. Students will learn how to market themselves to enter the field of early childhood education as a substitute teacher. A Kansas Bureau of Investigation check will be conducted at the beginning of the session for a substitute career in Early Care and Education. Prerequisite: TB Skin test.
