Emphasis is on synthesis of public health and nursing interventions which utilize family strengths and community resources to increase the lines of resistance of the family system and to attain and maintain optimal patterns of health. Clinical experiences are in the home setting and assist the family to identify and allay risk factors associated with known stressors and to strengthen the flexible lines of defense.     Provides an overview of types, methods and uses of research in developing nursing knowledge and practice with all client systems and levels of prevention. The course emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and apply clinical research studies to all client systems in all settings. Students have the develop a nursing research utilization proposal that provides for application of the principles of research evaluation, change theory and utilization of nursing research in practice. Community health programs, projects and agencies are investigated. The nursing process is applied to the community as a client system incorporating public health concepts. The governmental, political and legal influences on community client systems are explored. Clinical experiences in a variety of community settings provide an opportunity for students to study risk factors associated with known stressors and to strengthen the flexible lines of defense.     Explores theories and concepts of decision making, leadership, management and the change process in relationship to the application of the nursing process in various health care settings. Included is the relationship of personal, professional and organizational values and ethics to the identification of options and alternatives in leadership and management in the health care system. Health care policy is discussed and contemporary health care issues are critically evaluated as they relate to the health needs of the societal system and the practice of professional nursing. The clinical component provides an opportunity for students to experience (a) the role played by a nurse leader/manager and/or (b) engage in a leadership change project.     As a final course in preparation for nursing practice NURS 445 expands the theoretical basis for application of the nursing process care for the adult client experiencing complex system disruption. Clinical experiences in various health care settings, including a preceptorship experience, provide an opportunity for the student to apply all levels of prevention as intervention, including promotion, restoration and maintenance of system stability to complex system disruption resulting from internal and external environmental forces, while collaborating with other health professionals.     This course builds on NURS 31IR. It focuses on nursing pharmacology and therapeutics by presenting a theoretical foundation and practice-based approach to drug therapy application in various health care settings. The course emphasizes general principles, theories and facts about the medications and how they are administered. Practice-based content is presented on how the nursing process is integrated with pharmacology, and general principles of action are discussed to facilitate students' learning in the clinical setting. Specific drug information is discussed in relation to assessment, nursing diagnosis, client monitoring, intervention, client education and evaluation of safe and effective drug therapy. This course also provides the students with an opportunity to gain essential knowledge for a solid foundation in IV therapeutics and infusionrelated skills. In the laboratory students practice starting IVs and managing infusions and related equipment. Fee: Lab - $75 Winter
