This course examines herbal psychotropic drugs, with an emphasis on herbal psychotherapeutic drugs--their pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics), indications, contraindications, side effects and interactions with other medications; as well as natural sources from which herbal psychotropic drugs are derived and their potential for causing serious toxic reactions and compulsive abuse. A separate module on natural and spiritual healing--focusing specifically on the use of Mayan remedies, their origins and psychosocial benefits will comprise the final third of the course, which is offered in Belize, Central America. Students are reacquainted with ethical, historical, sociocultural, philosophical, and fiscal issues facing the profession. Attention to role and function, with emphasis on the school psychologist in a leadership role in orchestrating a full range of prevention and intervention services to children, youth, and families. This course will cover the theory and practical application of group dynamics with a focus on addictions. Such topics as peer pressure and leadership styles will be addressed. Since the predominant method of treatment in such modalities as therapeutic communities is group interaction, a segment of each class will be devoted to conducting actual groups. [1/3/2000]

Organizations such as schools and treatment facilities are increasingly being mandated to develop cost effective programs to address a broad spectrum of pressing social problems. For example with schools, we are deeply concerned about the prevention of substance abuse, and related health issues (eg. the spread of AIDS). Furthermore, all categories of organization are also being required to assume responsibility for the outcomes of these programs. In order to meet the goals of effectiveness and accountability, these institutions are in dire need of staff such as S.A.C.S. that are trained in these areas. [9/4/1996]

The course will assume the students' familiarity with the basic psychological concepts and processes and will concentrate on developing an understanding of the social underpinnings of psychological phenomena, as well as the effects of psychological processes on the social environment. Particular topics for discussion will include social influences on perception and attitude formation, the role of social norms and reference groups in human behavior, conflict, propaganda and public opinion, leadership, prejudice and discrimination, deviant behavior and a survey of research techniques.
