This course examines herbal psychotropic drugs, with an emphasis on herbal psychotherapeutic drugs--their pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics), indications, contraindications, side effects and interactions with other medications; as well as natural sources from which herbal psychotropic drugs are derived and their potential for causing serious toxic reactions and compulsive abuse. A separate module on natural and spiritual healing--focusing specifically on the use of Mayan remedies, their origins and psychosocial benefits will comprise the final third of the course, which is offered in Belize, Central America.
