ASST 505: China, The Media, and Politics
3.00 Credits
Georgetown University
This course explores how China is depicted in the American news media, and how this depiction influences local and federal politics and policy. Since the presidential election will also be in full swing, we will analyze the interplay of political rhetoric on the stump and media stories regarding China. In particular, the course will explore the meta-narrative of a "Rising China," which informs the logic and rhetoric of most stories about China economics, trade, politics, and human rights. How real is the meta-narrative? And how does this meta-narrative influence policy making at the local and federal level, not to mention presidential election rhetoric? A journey through China's supply chain with a professor who is a serial entrepreneur and 20 year China business practitioner will provide a factual, data-driven basis of comparison for the media stories about China that American voters and politicians consume. In addition to analyzing the China supply chain, we will also analyze policy debate and legislation at the federal and local levels. The course materials will include recent case studies from the ground in China, selected federal and local legislation and hearings, plus daily network and cable news and info-tainment (i.e., The Daily Show), magazines, newspapers, newsletters, blogs, and tweets.

ASST 511: Intl Pol Econ: East Asia
3.00 Credits
Georgetown University
This seminar examines the international political economy of East Asia. The region is undoubtedly of critical importance: it is home to half the world's population, and rapid economic development has fueled global economic growth. Yet it is also a region experiencing political and social changes that have profound implications for regional and global stability. This seminar analyzes trends in the region by examining the political nature of the most salient economic issues and their implications for policy and private sectors. Students are not expected to have an advanced proficiency in economics; however, it is highly recommended that students have some background in basic macroeconomic concepts and a certain familiarity with the international monetary and trading system.

ASST 668: Theory and Policy in Asia
3.00 Credits
Georgetown University
The focus of this class is on the dynamics of contemporary international relations in Asia. The course begins with three sessions to set the theoretical, historical and U.S. policy contexts. Subsequent sessions then test these theories, historical lessons and policy debates against specific case studies or "hot spots" in the region. These case studies include: the transformation of Japan; the rise of China; the nuclear stand-off on the Korean peninsula; Southeast Asia; India-Pakistan; the emerging institutional architecture of Asia; and transnational security threats. This is the required gateway course for the Masters Degree in Asian Studies and priority entry will be given to students enrolled in that program.
