The focus of this class is on the dynamics of contemporary international relations in Asia. The course begins with three sessions to set the theoretical, historical and U.S. policy contexts. Subsequent sessions then test these theories, historical lessons and policy debates against specific case studies or "hot spots" in the region. These case studies include: the transformation of Japan; the rise of China; the nuclear stand-off on the Korean peninsula; Southeast Asia; India-Pakistan; the emerging institutional architecture of Asia; and transnational security threats. This is the required gateway course for the Masters Degree in Asian Studies and priority entry will be given to students enrolled in that program.
