Prerequisite: Placement Basis or ENG 025 LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. This course satisfies the Diversity/Global Perspective requirement. This course surveys the development and interaction of world religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, African religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shintoism. It examines major figures, stories, rituals, and beliefs of the religions, and shows how they shape the lives of believers. Finally, it analyzes philosophical concepts such as God and gods, faith and reason, immortality, good and evil, karma, love, meditation, mysticism, and nirvana.

Prerequisite: A philosophy 100-level course, or permission of instructor. LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. This course satisfies the Diversity/Global Perspective requirement. An introduction to the diverse intellectual world of classical Buddhism from the perspective of academic philosophy, beginning with the life of Siddhartha Gautama and his teaching about the fact of suffering and his path to liberation from suffering. The main doctrines of the major traditions of Buddhism are surveyed; namely, Theravada, Maahayana and Vajrayana, with emphasis on Theravada. Pivotal concepts include karma, dharma, arhat, bodhisattva, sunyata and nirvana.

Prerequisite: Placement Basis or ENG 025, or permission of the instructor. LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. Concentrated readings and in-depth discussion of one or more of the great dialogues of Plato, chosen from the following: Meno, Republic, Laws, Phaedo, Symposium, Phaedrus, Apology, and Crito.

Prerequisite: Permission of honors coordinator or department LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. This seminar critically examines the central ideas of Plato and Aristotle on knowledge, mind, body, freedom, nature, ethics, politics, and religion. Plato's dialogues such as the Republic, Thaetetus, Protagoras, Meno, Phaedo, and Symposium; and writings of Aristotle such as the Metaphysics, On the Soul, Ethics, Politics, and Poetics are studied. The seminar also contrasts their views with those of other ancient philosophers, such as Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Zeno, Epictetus, Cicero, and Aurelius. Students develop the ability to formulate their own views on philosophic issues.

LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. A non-darkroom basic photography course for individuals who are not photography majors. Camera use and critical understanding of photographs are taught. Students must complete weekly creative assignments using their own cameras.

Topics illustrated by presentations include the invention of photography, the photograph as document, the photograph as art, the natural landscape, the portrait, color photography and contemporary photography.
