Films of technical and literary merit dating from c. 1913 to the present are examined for the diverse images of women which they convey. Issues of class, race, ethnicity, global perspective and sexual preference are considered. Films by women directors and writers are emphasized, but coverage also includes works by significant male filmmakers. Genres range from classical Hollywood narrative fiction to documentary, animation, and avant-garde.
