    This course allows students to apply a variety of skills learned in other Communication classes. Students will participate in a variety of practical projects including: public speaking, leadership, project management, event planning, administration of programs, database management, speaking to members of the community and high schools and research projects. The goal of this class is to strengthen communication skills and broaden students' understanding of the discipline. Prerequisite: COMM B1 or COMM B2 or COMM B4 or COMM B5 or COMM B6 or COMM B7 or COMM B8, or evaluation by instructor of student's public speaking, interpersonal, and group skills.     COMM B49 explores human communication in a variety of leadership roles and applies principles of communication to leadership in family, community and organizational settings. Students will develop a mission statement as a tool for personal leadership communication. Leadership self-diagnostics will serve to provide students insight into their leadership abilities, skills and potential. Students will also explore how leaders communicate by learning from a pool of guest speakers representing community leaders from a variety of levels and organizations. Students will draw on others' experiences as they assess their own leadership communication. Recommended: English Level 6, Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 54 lect. Offered: S (every two years).     This course examines theories and practices of political communication during presidential elections. Students will focus on methods that candidates, parties, and stakeholders use to communicate political messages. Students will examine the use of both traditional media and emerging technologies in contemporaneous political campaigns. Students will also analyze and criticize candidate speeches and debate performances. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 54 lect. CCS: Liberal Arts and Sciences.     Theoretical and practical aspects of argumentation and public debating to develop students' critical thinking abilities. Emphasis is on composition, presentation, and evaluation of speeches in argumentative, debate, and advocacy contexts. Identification of public issues, research and organization of evidence, building sound and effective arguments, and facility with debate formats are the primary learning outcomes of this course. Introduces logical reasoning and builds competence with formal reasoning before applying those to argumentation and debate about public issues. Recommended: English Level 6, Reading Level 5 or 6.     Study of basic theory and skills of intercultural communication. Emphasis is given to communicating effectively in diverse social and professional environments. Focus will also be given to the analysis and comparisons of message perception and transmission in interactions between people from different cultures.     Concentrates on a global look at communication in an organizational setting: theory and practice of communication in private and public organizations, interpersonal and group communication patterns within organizations, systems of ethical internal and external communication, leadership in the organization, organizational culture's impact on communication, and the role of communication in achieving organizational goals. Includes team projects that will require work outside of class and visits to a community location of your team's choosing. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 54 lect.     This oral communication class examines small group processes such as group formation and development, conflict, problem solving, and group climate. Covers an understanding of diversity, leadership roles, and theory. Students participate in class groups where experiential learning and presentations are part of the class experience.
