    1 unit 18 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 101. This course is designed for licensed foster parents and kinship caregivers who may provide care for children exhibiting severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances. Topics will include the definition of a severe emotionally and/or behaviorally disturbed child, dynamics of the foster family, an overview of typical and atypical child development, behavior manage-ment, and information on professional intervention, special education services, community resources, and current licensing regulations. This course meets the initial training requirements for certified D Rate caregivers in Los Angeles County. (AVC)

    2 units 36 hours total This course is designed to help foster youth understand the emancipation process and develop the necessary skills needed for successful independent living. Topics covered will include health and safety issues, employability, choices and consequences, and current community resources. (AVC) ( R1)

    1-4 units hours vary Prerequisite: Students must be registered in at least 7 units (including the Work Experience units) and have approval of instructor supervising work experience subject area. Prior to enrolling, students must attend a scheduled orientation. The Work Experience program provides supervised employment extending classroom-based learning to an on-thejob learning situation. Students meet with instructor by arrangement to discuss learning objectives, along with experiences and/or problems arising on the job. (CSU, AVC) ( R3)

    3 units 6 hours weekly Limitation on Enrollment: TB skin test clearance within the past year. Livescan fingerprint clearance required. Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 105. This course emphasizes the application of child development theory to classroom practices. Students will employ a variety of child observation and documentation skills and create learning plans using emergent curriculum strategies. Two hours per week will be spent in the college classroom; four hours per week will be spent in a supervised early childhood classroom setting, under the direction of an approved early childhood mentor/ teacher. NOTE: Students should obtain an information packet in the AVC Child Development Center four weeks before the class begins. (CSU, AVC)

This course is designed to provide the continuing practicum student with indepth practice in the application of child development theory to classroom environments, curriculum development, educational practices, and staff, family and community relationships. Two hours per week will be spent in the college classroom; four hours per week will be spent in a supervised early childhood classroom setting, under the direction of an approved early childhood mentor/ teacher. NOTE: Students should obtain an information packet from the AVC Child Development Center four weeks before the class begins. (CSU, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 101 and CFE 102. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 101. Guidelines for creating a safe and healthy environment for young children will be explored. While the focus of this course is on young children in educational settings, the course will be useful for parents and community volunteers as well as early childhood professionals. This course includes training in emergency preparedness, public health and safety, personal health, safety and nutrition, and emphasizes partnerships between home, school and the community. Students will have the opportunity to earn CPR and First Aid certification as part of the course. A current TB clearance may be required. (CSU, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 102 and CFE 106. This course is designed for students employed in or planning employment in before and after school programs for elementary school children. Students will study the needs of school-age children and environments for school-aged care, review models of before and after school child care programs and develop curriculum plans. Students will learn ways to effectively support children and their families and to identify community resources available to children and families. A current TB clearance may be required. (CSU, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 102 and CFE 106. Designed for those students working in or planning to work in school-age programs. Topics to be covered include creating environments, reviewing schoolage program models and designing developmentally appropriate curriculum experiences for before and after schoolage programs.     Same course as MM 101L. .5 unit 1.8 hours weekly Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CG 101. A laboratory in support of the course designed to allow students to advance their knowledge, complete course assignments and master learning objectives. (CSU, AVC) ( R2)

    3 units 6 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CG 101/MM 101. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CG 103L. Advisory: Eligibility for READ 099. Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. Introduction to the theory, basic principles and techniques of computer-generated high-resolution graphics, video ditherizing, image transfer, and Fonts generation. (CSU, AVC) ( R2)
