This course will examine labor-management relations in the contemporary US, considering both the internal dynamics of management and the structure and governance of labor unions. An emphasis is placed on the collective bargaining process and on emerging human resource management issues which relate to labor/employee relations in union and non-union organizations. Course content focuses on the application of theory and research in multicultural communication. Specific topics addressed include intercultural communication (between members of different cultures), multicultural communication (among members of various cultures), culture-biased assumptions, contrasting cultural values, communication and negotiation strategies, verbal and nonverbal patterns, culture shock, and country-specific information. Supplements management theory by providing well-balanced coverage of critical small business issues and practical experience in the determination and solution of actual business problems. Internet applications and case studies in the small business community augment lecture and discussion and are used to examine the issues and problems faced by small and family-owned businesses.
