This course will examine children’s and young adult literature and literary techniques, as well as basic principles and concepts in the teaching of visual and performing arts to children. Students will learn to respond thoughtfully to various forms of children’s literature. They will identify genre characteristics, establish a purpose for selection, identify and analyze literary elements, and generate essential questions and activities relevant to a genre and title. They will also create developmentally appropriate genre and author studies and identify characteristics of author’s of children’sliterature, and artistic elements of illustrators of children’s literature. Three hours a week.

The major areas to be considered in this course will include: how children learn mathematics, teaching mathematics with a variety of manipulatives, the role of problem solving and critical thinking in the elementary mathematics curriculum, the sequential development of mathematics skills for computation in the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, geometry and measurement, an understanding of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards (NCTM), and the role of calculators and computers in the elementary school. Three hours a week.

This course is an introduction to the philosophy, origins, issues, advantages and organization of the Middle School. The course will provide an overview of the role of middle school education (5-8) within the context of the K-12 educational program. Three hours a week.

This course examines the impact of computertechnology on learning and instruction at K-12 levels. Includes theoretical consideration of learning effects, practical planning for integration into curricula, and hands-on experience with Internet and available software. Three hours a week.

This course provides students with an introduction to the philosophy, organization, development and implementation of high school courses of study. Special emphasis will be placed on the socio-cultural context of teaching in the contemporary American high school. Examination of contemporary high school curricula, instructional techniques and issues in assessment of student learning will also be included. Ample class time will also be devoted to in-depth discussion of classroom management, special or alternative scheduling models, and current thinking on the teaching and learning process. Three hours a week.

Focuses on the design and development of elementary and secondary school programs that address cultural diversity including different racial, ethnic, cultural and linguistic groups as well as educational issues related to gender and exceptionality. This course examines the philosophy, history and recent curriculum trends for multicultural education including the concepts and issues of culture, cultural pluralism, bicultural/ bilingualism, ethnicity and global education. Three hours a week.

This course will focus on methods and materials for Middle School teaching (5-8). Topics to be examined include appropriate teaching strategies and approaches for addressing the middle school age student needs as well as the design of an effective middle school curriculum. Observation and field experience are required: (ED 251A). Three hours a week.

A team teaching approach combining lecture and laboratory experiences provided by staff members. The classes are sectioned according to the particular subject field and the course is given in two consecutive parts, with Part I as a prerequisite to Part II. Students must participate for at least 40 hours in field-based pre-practicum activities in the role covered by the teaching certificate sought. Three hours a week.
