Topics include vocabulary development, comprehension skills development, critical reading skills, and study skills. Prerequisite: RDG 097, or entrance reading score in accordance with approved TCSGadmissionscore levels. Lab may be substituted, as needed, for class hours on a 2to1 basis.

This course introduces the physiologic and pharmacologic basis of pulmonary and cardiac medications. Students will study the preparation, calculation of dosages, and mixtures. Students study general principles of pharmacology as a basis for an indepth discussion of bronchoactive drugs and drug groups related to the cardiopulmonary system, including neuromuscular blocking agents, central nervous system depressants, cardiovascular agents, and diuretics. RTT 112 provides students with the principles of chemistry and physics as they apply to respiratory therapy and basic respiratory therapy procedures. Students examine specific modes of respiratory care to develop an understanding of the principles of application to patients, indications, hazards, contraindications, and evaluation of therapy. Modes of care include medical gases, humidity/aerosol therapy, positive pressure breathing, incentive spirometry, expiratory resistances, postural drainage, percussion/vibration, and medical ethics. This course also examines respiratory therapy equipment utilized in performing basic therapeutic modalities. Provides an indepth study of cardiac and pulmonary anatomy and physiology, and the diagnostic procedures commonly used in the hospital to evaluate these systems. Emphasizes the heartlung relationship and clinical applications of these phenomena in the cardiopulmonary system. Topics include respiratory function ventilatory mechanisms gas transport laboratory analysis natural and chemical regulation of breathing circulation, blood flow and pressure, and cardiac function and renal physiology. RTT 211 provides students with information on the assessment of etiology, pathophysiology, treatment, and prognosis of common cardiopulmonary, cardiovascular, and pulmonary diseases and condition. Topics include infectious diseases and conditions, respiratory diseases and conditions, neuromuscular diseases and conditions, cardiovascular diseases and conditions, trauma, patient assessment, laboratory tests, radiographs, and pulmonaryfunction evaluation. This course provides instruction in the theory, setup, operation, and maintenance of mechanical ventilators. Program instructors also review emergency airway disorders and equipment used to establish and maintain both adult and pediatric airways. Topics include mechanical ventilator theory, ventilator operation, ventilator maintenance, insertion and maintenance of artificial airways, fiber optic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, chest tube maintenance, and arterial blood gas sampling.
